CREATIVE CONTAGION: Weaving on a zoom

During the spring of 2020, in response to the dangers of COVID-19, the weaving studio of the National Council of Jewish Women New York’s Council Lifetime Learning Program transitioned from a communal studio of clattering looms to a remote Zoom room. Since April, the artists of the NCJW NY CLL weaving studio have been meeting online weekly. Through these remote meetings, the group has been able to continue exploring new weaving techniques and share in each other’s creative joy, strengthening an invaluable community and providing a sense of togetherness during this difficult time.

Working primarily on small hand-sized frame looms, the group has collectively created over 120 small weavings (as of November 2020)! This page celebrates the group’s abundant, creative spirit.

The participating artists are: Antonia Perez, Catherine Ruello, Karen Florman, Marjorie Davanzo, Myra Tattenbaum, Steven Rose, Susan Landsman, and Vita Sorrell. The meetings have been facilitated by Jamie Boyle through the support of NCJW NY. Some of the looms that you see in the photos were made by Jeremy Boyle.

The weaving will continue through the “foreseeable future.”
